Botox in dentistry
Dr. Stewart is certified through the American Academy of Facial Esthetics to administer Botox treatment. Botox is a great way to ease jaw pain, treat migraines and cosmetically smooth fine lines. Botox works by eliminating nerve connections to muscles that operate in the jaw, forehead area, etc. The nerve connections do re-grow within 3-4 months. For patients with jaw pain, Botox is able to prohibit the main chewing muscle from applying excess force to the TMJ (tempromandibular joint). By eliminating the huge forces of contraction, the pain in the jaw is eased. This in combination with a night guard, rest, and jaw posture awareness can treat the pain caused by TMJ dysfunction in most cases. We are able to administer Botox for cosmetic purposes as well. When patients find out we do this, they may be a little surprised at first. Is this in scope of your practice? However, we are arguably the best suited as we inject into the face every day. In addition, we wear loupes (little magnifying glasses) to ensure we do not cause bruising in high vascular areas, such as the crows feet. We offer free consultations if you would like to learn more about Botox!
